I love crocheting and I'm always happy when someone gives me a new project to work on. That's why birthdays are especially great for me - I get to crochet cute things and it brings joy to two people: the birthday child and myself, because I get to crochet!
This little panda came to life in exactly that kind of situation. Time was a bit short, so I looked for a pattern for a cute red panda and ended up choosing Ekaterina Chirkova's red panda. To help him have a better grip, we made the arms a bit longer - and to keep the proportions right, we also extended the body slightly.
He's able to grip because I sewed magnets into his paws. To do that, I bought the thinnest felt I could find, cut out two circles for each magnet - slightly larger than the magnets - and sewed the magnets into those. Then I carefully stitched the wrapped magnets into the paws. At first, I sewed them onto the bottoms of the paws, but that made it harder to grip. So I undid the legs and moved the magnets to the sides. Now it works perfectly.
And because he's just so incredibly cute - and I had enough leftover yarn - I didn't just make one for the birthday child, but one for us too. Now he happily hangs on our Engadin clock (Engadiner Holzräderuhr). Technically, he does affect the ticking speed a bit, but since the clock follows its own rhythm anyway, it's the perfect spot for him.
