Our guest bed finally gave out after 15 years of use and multiple assemblies and disassemblies. So, with a heavy heart, we replaced it. Sounds simple enough, but it turned out to be more complicated.
First, we realized that IKEA beds just aren't as nice as they used to be. The new version of our bed was only available in plain white or some rather questionable colors - not really our style. The alternatives were even worse. So, we went with the plain white one.
But instead of settling for that, we decided to upcycle it a bit. We covered the drawers with pink adhesive foil - already a big improvement! And since I was in DIY mode, why not go a step further? I still had some glow-in-the-dark paper from my childhood, so I used it to create a cute starry sky, complete with a bunch of happy makkuro kurosuke.
The starlight bed features my favorite constellation, Orion and our zodiac signs. Also, I added some randomly scattered stars in between.
Unfortunately, the adhesive on the glow-in-the-dark paper had long since lost its stickiness. It still worked fine on the side panels, but on the inner sides, with a sleeping person "rubbing" against them, they got loosed. I loved how it looked, so I decided to buy some new, sturdier glow-in-the-dark stars and used them to replace the existing stars on the inner walls of the bed.
